Nurzawanah binti Mazlan
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Personally, JCHS has helped me grow my self-confidence around people and taught me how to manage myself better. Frankly, I am a very cluttered person, but adjusting to this college has helped me become more concise and organized. Professionally, JCHS has built my character as a future nurse, honing my leadership skills, critical thinking, and adaptability to changes.
1. Tell us your full name and what program you are currently taking.
My name is Nurzawanah binti Mazlan and I am currently taking the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.
2. How is it like studying at JCHS?
Studying in JCHS is undoubtedly tough, just as any nursing institutions. Especially with the high standards and expectations, it is likely that studying here requires you to exert more hard work and dedication towards nursing. Nevertheless, it’s a rewarding and enjoyable experience that can help many people in the future.
3. What’s your favorite spot on campus and why?
My favorite spot on campus is the cafeteria simply because I love eating. It is one of my ways to recharge myself for studying and coping with stressful events.
4. Although quite recently, what are the things you like about JCHS?
I like that the lecturers are very supportive and responsive to student’s concerns and the classroom is comfortable.
5. Can you share a memorable or funny moment you’ve had at JCHS?
The most memorable moment would be the time that we had Banchetto. It was a required event for my Nutrition and Diet Module. I still remember that my group and I had to wake up early at 3 am and drove all the way to my friend’s house just to prepare food for the event. We were still wearing our pyjamas and groggily did all our tasks. I enjoyed working with my friends and I was satisfied with our results, we ended up winning the best and creative booth.
6. How do you balance your studies with social activities or hobbies?
Time management is important to balance myself being an entrepreneur and a nursing student. Sometimes I remind myself to always chill and not think about the overload and basically just give a positive attitude about everything, that’s how I survive. Knowing when to stop and rest is another way for me to maintain a healthy balance with my studies and my business with occasional self-pampering to reward myself.
7. Who has been your biggest inspiration or mentor at JCHS?
My biggest inspiration and biggest mentor is my lecturer, Dr. Nemencio Santos. In class, he would often share his journey in his life and career. His story is very inspiring and I really relate to it. I initially wanted to study medicine same as him, but continued nursing instead. He didn’t see it as a setback and pursued nursing with excellence. Now he is a well and reputable person with many experiences and wisdom. He is who I aspire to be in the future.
8. What do you do to relax and unwind after a long day of classes?
After a long day of classes, I would initially eat my favourite meal while watching a Netflix series, then I take a long nap and spend time with my boyfriend, it usually consists of a rant session and playing mobile games. After that I unwind on the massage chair and continued conversing with friends.
9. How has JCHS helped you grow personally and professionally?
Personally, JCHS has helped me grow my self-confidence around people and taught me how to manage myself better. Frankly, I am a very cluttered person, but adjusting to this college has helped me become more concise and organized. Professionally, JCHS has built my character as a future nurse, honing my leadership skills, critical thinking, and adaptability to changes.
10. What do you hope to achieve at JCHS, and what are your goals and dreams?
I believe that I work hard in my studies, am very driven, and competitive. I hope to become one of the best students at JCHS and gain a wealth of knowledge and skills. My goals and dreams are to make myself marketable and become a highly sought-after nurse in Brunei. Additionally, I want to continue my studies and earn a master’s degree after completing my undergraduate course.
11. Can you give tips and advice on how you maintain good grades in your studies?
Know your learning style. When I was younger, I was not good at studying. I failed a few subjects and found studying difficult. One day, I learned my learning style, and since then, learning has become easier. I am a kinesthetic and visual learner, so most of the time, I write down what I learn. Have a plan and motivation. Plan your studying schedule in advance and always have your BIG WHY. Make sure that you are learning for yourself and not for others. Most importantly, have support from parents, family, or friends.
12. Would you recommend your family and friends to enroll in JCHS?
Yes, I would recommend JCHS for people who wish to aim for the best. Studying in JCHS is a great opportunity for a nursing career as it is linked to JPMC Medical Centre. I believe studying here can open many doors and that’s what I would share with others.
13. Do you have anything you wish to say to the next Future Healthcare Leaders?
Be resilient and resourceful. Learn when to be assertive and don’t be shy to ask questions when you don’t understand.
