4th October 2024 – JPMC College of Health Sciences (JCHS) organized a special talk in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, featuring Dr. Hj Azlan bin Hj Suhailee, Senior Medical Officer from the Early Detection and Cancer Prevention Services (EDCP) at Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) entitled ‘Unlocking Early Cancer Detection Diagnosis’. The event, held at JCHS, aimed to educate students on the critical importance of early detection and the role of preventive measures in reducing breast cancer risks. The talk saw an impressive turnout, with not only JCHS students in attendance but also nursing students from Politeknik Brunei, who were invited to participate in this collaborative health awareness initiative. The presence of young healthcare students underscored the importance of equipping future healthcare leaders with the knowledge and tools necessary to combat one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women worldwide.
During the session, Dr. Hj Azlan delivered an engaging and informative presentation, where he emphasized key breast cancer statistics, outlined common risk factors, and discussed modern preventive strategies aimed at reducing the risk of developing the disease. A lively Q&A session followed, allowing students to ask questions and deepen their understanding of the subject matter. In addition to the informative talk, Dr. Hj Azlan and the EDCP team conducted a live demonstration on breast self-examination techniques, a critical skill for early detection that could potentially save lives. The demonstration helped participants become more confident in recognizing the early signs of breast cancer, empowering them with practical knowledge they could share with their family and peers.
The success of this event was made possible through the generous support and collaboration of PJSC, who played a pivotal role in organizing and promoting the event. PJSC has long been committed to advancing public health education, and this talk was part of their broader initiative to promote cancer awareness across the community. JCHS expressed their gratitude to Dr. Hj Azlan and the team from Early Detection and Cancer Prevention Services, for their ongoing efforts to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention. The college remains dedicated to fostering educational opportunities that not only prepare their students for careers in healthcare but also empower them to contribute to vital health issues in their communities. With events like these, JCHS continues to uphold its mission of developing tomorrow’s healthcare leaders while advocating for improved health education and preventive care.
