JCHS Students Attend Inspiring Talk on Healthcare for Marginalized Communities

On the 22nd of November 2024, JCHS students had the privilege of attending an insightful session by Dr. Maria Rita Cucio titled “Researching the Margins: Redefining Research Amongst Marginalized Sectors in Healthcare Systems.” Held as part of the college’s Wellness and Recreation Program (WRP), the session highlighted the importance of inclusive research in addressing disparities faced by underserved communities in healthcare. Dr. Cucio emphasized how important it is to not overlook these groups, perpetuating inequality, and called for more considerate, more thoughtful and equitable research practices.

During the session, Dr. Cucio shared real-world examples of how research can give voice to marginalized populations and drive meaningful change. She encouraged students to adopt a compassionate and critical approach to their future roles as healthcare professionals, highlighting the need to understand and address the barriers these groups face. Her thought-provoking insights resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring them to envision a more equitable healthcare system.

JCHS extends its gratitude to Dr. Cucio for her invaluable contributions to this vital discussion. By integrating such impactful events into the WRP, the college continues to empower students to approach their careers with empathy, inclusivity, and a commitment to advancing healthcare for all.
